Trends and challenges in International Wine Trade. The need for new strategies for companies and regions.

Abstract

Over the past 12 years, both, consumption and international trade in volume, have been steadily declining. However, global wine exports managed to increase in value until 2022 with some categories, segments of the market and markets showing promising growth. However, a downturn in 2023, marked by a decrease in sales value, has raised concerns. This paper explores whether these shifts represent long-term structural changes or are simply short-term market fluctuations. How are these trends impacting wine producers, distributors, and regions? What strategies are companies using to adapt? Structural as well as temporary challenges affect both the wine industry. This paper will address these pressing questions, suggesting that a flexible regulatory framework, close follow-up of market trends and diversification of portfolios are essential for future resilience. Additionally, we identify three emerging wine industry segments, each requiring unique strategies: traditional wines, new wines, and reinvented wine products.

Puntos a desarrollar: 1. Towards more coherent rules for alcohol labelling in the European Union

In its 2020 beating cancer plan, the european commission announced plans for mandatory warning signs for alcoholic beverages. However, no concrete legislative proposal has been put forward so far. Instead, ireland passed national legislation in 2023 that requires warning signs for all alcoholic beverages from 2026. Despite significant effects for the common market, the eu commission did not this challenge this law in the so-called tris notification procedure. We argue that the commission’s inaction is consistent with the case law of the european court of justice: in the absence of harmonized rules, member states have a large margin of discretion to enact national health measures.

Viti-Tunnel, an automatically removable protection against diseases, frost and hail, a way to drastically reduce the use of pesticides

Using unmanned aerial vehicle with multispectral camara to efficiently and precisely monitor the incidence of downy mildew and technical maturity of beibinghong (vitis amurensis Rpru.) grapes

Multispectral unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been successfully applied in monitoring vine vegetative growth, however, there are still potential relationships between remote sensing vegetation indexes (vis) and vine condition or grape quality, so it is worthy a deeper investigation to make a better use of UAV. One of the purposes of the study is to find out vis that could denote the severity of downy mildew (DM), so that precise and differentiated control strategies would be adopted subsequently.
