Wine as cultural national heritage: 10 years of the “Vino Bebida Nacional” law in Argentina: review and lessons

Abstract

Ten years have passed since the enactment and implementation of law no. 26,870 “national drink wine” in argentina, a pioneering legislation worldwide that seeks to disseminate the cultural characteristics inherent in the production, elaboration, and consumption of wine, as well as its deep-rooted traditions. This essay delves into the effects of elevating wine to the status of a national symbol, exploring its influence on the economy, tourist promotion, and its contribution to national identity.  Through the analysis of specific cases, the lessons learned during this decade and their relevance to other wine-producing countries are examined. The impact of institutional support from public entities in recognizing the role of wine as a fundamental element in the construction of argentine cultural identity is especially highlighted, as well as its contribution to local development and tourism in wine-producing regions. Additionally, the challenges faced in the implementation of this policy are addressed, and recommendations are proposed for its application in international contexts.  This essay provides a comprehensive view of how this type of legislation can serve as a model for the protection of a true national heritage, embedding it in culture and promoting sustainable development in wine-producing countries worldwide.

Application of regenerative agriculture to viticulture: The REVINE project

Conventional viticulture improved the quality of production, but the economic costs can be unsustainable. Today, producers need to consider consumers’ demands for healthy, eco-friendly products. Institutions promote sustainable agriculture, with regenerative agriculture being the latest generation of methodologies focused on recovering losses and ensuring future sustainability. The revine project studies regenerative agricultural technology applied in mediterranean countries to provide precise indications for soil processing and effective vineyard treatments.

Wine industry, digital transformation, and sustainability: a systematic literature

This paper aims to (i) identify the state of the art regarding digital transformation in the transition to sustainability in the wine industry, (ii) analyze the adoption of digital technologies at different stages of the winemaking process and their contribution to the triple bottom line of sustainability, and (iii) present a research agenda that facilitates the development of the field, providing contributions to both literature and managerial practice.

Technical efficiency and socio-environmental sustainability in the wine sector: tradeoff or complementarity? Evidence from Italy

In recent decades, sustainability has risen to prominence across various industries, including agriculture, spurred by initiatives such as the new common agricultural policy and the farm to fork strategy within the European Union. Among agricultural activities, viticulture stands as a crucial player in sustainability, intertwining environmental, social, and economic dimensions, as exemplified by the OIV general principles of sustainable viticulture. Italy, one of the main players in the global wine market, has long been making efforts towards the introduction of sustainability-oriented practices and certifications.

Egg allergens in wine. Validation of a new automated method for ovalbumin quantification

Ovalbumin (ova), a natural clarifying protein, is particularly suitable for clarifying red wines. It helps improve the tannic and polyphenolic stability of the wine by removing the most astringent tannins and contributing to soften and refine the structure. Ova binds to suspended particles, proteins, polysaccharides, and, to a lesser extent, tannins through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, forming large complexes that can be removed from the wine through fining and/or filtration before bottling.

Energy optimization of the Charmat-Martinotti refermentation process

The european union has estimated that energy consumption for wine production is about 1,750 million kwh per year, of which 500 million kwh is attributable to italy. In recent years, Italy has emerged as the world’s leading wine producer with about 50 million hectoliters per year. About 20 percent (9.8 million hectoliters) of Italian wine is marketed after refermentation according to the Charmat-Martinotti method.
