Legal and economic evolution of the Japanese wine industry in the 21st century

Abstract

The Japanese wine industry, traditionally subjected to stringent regulations focused primarily on taxation since the 19th century, encounters unprecedented challenges and opportunities in the 21st century. This study delves into the effects of international standards and relations with the European Union (EU) and the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) on the Japanese wine industry. It explores how adjustments to trends of globalisation, liberalisation, and valorisation are transforming legal and administrative controls, aiming not only at quality assurance but also at safeguarding the interests of producers and consumers. From a legal perspective, we analyse the necessity of harmonising national laws with international standards to facilitate trade and enhance the reputation of Japanese wine. Economically, this research highlights new market opportunities arising from liberalisation and examines the impact of these changes on the national economy and Japan’s international standing in the wine industry. This study emphasises the importance of a balanced approach between tradition and innovation for the future development of the Japanese wine industry in a globalised context.

Algae protein: fining agent for white wine, sustainable, non-allergenic and animal-free

The development of non-animal and non-allergenic alternatives to traditional protein fining agents used in winemaking is of critical importance in order to ensure consumer safety and production sustainability. This study evaluates the effect of protein extracted from three types of algae (spirulina, chlorella vulgaris and tetraselmis chuii) as fining agents on the polymeric proanthocyanidin content responsible for astringency, as well as their effect on the colour, phenolic composition and volatile aroma of two white wines (a and b).

The production of certified grape planting material is one of the most important problems in the Russian federation. According to the scheme for the production of healthy grape planting material, before being introduced into in vitro culture, the source plants of each variety (Moldova, Augustin, Bart) were individually assessed for typical varietal characteristics and the presence/absence of symptoms of infection by pests.

Organic wines, although resulting from a production method based on the non-use of synthetic phytosanitary products, are not always free of residues. These residues can result from cross-contamination during production in the field or in the cellar, during the production or aging of the wine. In recent years, with the improvement of analysis techniques, a molecule, phosphonic acid, the main metabolite of fosetyl-al (banned in organic farming) is regularly quantified in organic wines and its origin is not clearly identified.

Mycotoxin accumulation and the possibilities of biological control of wine production quality

Against the background of climate change and the increasing impact of phytopathogenic agents of mycotic origin on the vine favors the appearance and toxicity of mycotoxins in wine.

Towards a European data basis based of advanced multi-isotopic signatures and artificial intelligence: the wine in blue project

Major and trace elements are essential for the development of grapes used for the wine. They are primarily originating from the soil. Some elements are also seldomly added during the wine making process. Therefore, the largest spectrum of major, trace and ultra-trace elements in the final wine product is a good signature of its geographical origin. In the frame of the European tracewindu, we have developed a very original multi-isotopic dilution method using triple quadrupole icp/ms.
